About Heritage Shores Nature Preserve

Heritage Shores Nature Preserve

Heritage Shores Nature Preserve encompasses approximately 1000 acres of protected land along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in Berrien County, Michigan. The preserve protects important coastal ecosystems including sandy beaches, dunes, hardwood forest, marshes, and ponds, providing crucial habitat for native plants and wildlife. The terrain rises gently from the lakeshore, offering views of the expansive lake and nearby wetlands. Opened to the public in 2010, the preserve is managed by the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy with a mission to conserve natural habitats while offering recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy nearly 8 miles of maintained trails that traverse forested areas and dunes, popular for birdwatching, photography, and peaceful nature walks. Key features include Lake Michigan beachfront access, rich diversity of migratory bird species, and areas of native wildflowers and rare plants. Heritage Shores is a critical stopover for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl, making it a hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts. The preserve appeals to families, hikers, naturalists, and paddlers who can launch small boats from adjacent access points. Its proximity to the town of Bridgman provides easy access while maintaining a quiet, natural setting free from heavy development. Educational signage along trails informs visitors about local ecology and conservation efforts. Heritage Shores serves as an important natural refuge on Michigan’s Great Lakes coast, combining protection of unique ecosystems with excellent outdoor recreational experiences.
